Why Old-Age Homes?

The fact is in this fast moving world, the understanding in relationship between parents and children is breaking down. At one time parents who used to wish for children to fill their void in life now find themselves living in empty spaces. It is harsh reality of today’s nuclear family set up, where children are unable to devote time, care and most importantly lend sympathetic ear to the elderly family members. Just imagine living your life with family, where everything is almost as it should be, children, parents, good life, stable routine and then suddenly one day, you are asked to move to an alien place.

If it is discussed then many will raise hand in favor of this system. It is because the old age homes are increasing whole around the world. It is a fact that the biggest strength of our society if percolated down to the family unit is that of living with our parents. And it’s this very unit that is witnessing a breakdown. That means more and more people are getting detached from their parents.

The trends are shifting from joint family to nuclear family concept at larger scale. The today’s system are arguing that the two age bands can not grow together. In India, old age was never a problem. Elder abuse was considered as a western problem and old age home was an alien concept. Earlier the elderly persons of a family were respected a lot and they continued to live with respect till their death. But now the times have changed. The elderly are treated as burden. The country where Bhishma Pitamah vowed of lifelong celibacy to please his father, where Shravan traveled to the forty pilgrimages carrying his parents on his shoulders, is gradually loosing its sheen.

Old age people needs care, love and healthy emotional family sharing for satisfaction. New one needs growth and success in today’s competitive world. These two objectives are to be strategically balanced. No wonder concept of old age homes has become a fad these days. It may provide companionship to elderly people who are dejected by their children, but can an old age home be a natural choice for parents? Definitely not, as an old age home is last resort not your first choice. It’s high time that society must realize this.

And if we stay blindfolded, day is not so far when our children would dispose off us in the same way.
