HoaxSlayer: How an 11-year girl fooled the entire nation
Shraddha Shukla, aged 11, had vowed to swim 550 km in the Ganga river from Kanpur to Varanasi in 10 days. Even as the river continues to rage and devastate many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar, Shraddha took the plunge to raise awareness among the masses for cleanliness of Ganga. What made it special is, Shraddha has no formal training and comes from a poor financial background. And her wish to spread awareness for the cleanliness in Ganga, is certainly laudable. The story could fascinate anyone. Vinod Kapri, an award winning filmmaker came across this mermaid’s story and decided to make a documentary on her, so that everyone can know more about this heroic swimathon. But he was shocked to know the truth when he reached UP with his team to cover Jalpari’s story. Vinod Kapri and his team were waiting near Vidhychal ghat and as they spotted the boat of the expedition, they started rolling the camera. As they approached towards and the boat, they spotted the girl sitting in the moving boat and when her father, Lalit Shukla, saw everything filmed, he started shouting and abusing Kapri and his team and threatened for dire consequences. The entire incident of Lalit Shukla shouting at Kapri has been recorded by Kapri’s team. During all this drama, Kapri’s team found that the girl swims 2 to 3 Kilometers everyday, once she gets out of spectators’ sight she boards on to the boat and jumps again in water when comes in public’s view. Vinod has also released some video footage he shot during Jalpari’s swimathon. The footage reveals how Lalit Shukla, father of Shraddha Shukla, was not only fooling people by projecting the girl as an avatar of ‘Maa Ganga’ but was also making the girl swim for long stretches against her wish. The video shows how Lalit Shukla made Shraddha swim just 200 to 300 metres while approaching a ghat, having public and media presence, and then carrying her in the boat once they have crossed the ghat. One of the divers accompanying the girl also revealed on camera how Lalit was fooling the people by projecting his daughter as an incarnation of ‘Maa Ganga’ and collecting money from people on the ghats where Shraddha stopped for rest. Vinod called off his project after seeing this truth and decided to expose the truth as Lalit was playing with the sentiments of the people, besides destroying his daughter’s childhood. “I have sympathy with the child as her parents were destroying her childhood for their selfish motives,” he said. Taking suo motu on this revelation, the Women & Child Welfare Department has set up an enquiry panel to check if Lalit Shukla was exploiting Jalpari, for money, against her wish.
